Les fast food sont un mode de restauration dont le but est de faire gagner du temps au client en lui permettant d'emporter rapidement les plats commandés, et ce, pour un prix généralement moindre que dans la restauration traditionnelle. Les plats servis sont le plus souvent des hamburgers ou des sandwichs, accompagnés de frites et de sodas. On peut aussi y manger un hot-dog, une pizza, un club sandwich, un taco ou un sushi. Les Fast food sont une sorte de mal bouffe. Cela entraine une augmentation de l’obésité et des maladies liées à une mauvaise alimentation. Au canada une étude montre qu’entre 5 et 6 millions de personnes âgées de 20 à 64 ans souffriraient d'obésité au Canada. C'est presque le tiers de la population. En 2000, les obèses composaient moins de 15 % de la population. En 2009 une étude (aux USA) a montré que la présence d’un restaurant rapide à moins de 150 mètres d’une école augmente de 5,2 % le risque de voir un enfant devenir obèse. La restauration rapide a plusieurs inconvénients, dont l'augmentation de l'obésité et le risque d'avoir des maladies cardio-vasculaires. Sur la carte ci-dessous des Etats-Unis, chaque point représente un McDonald's ainsi que sa zone d'influence, ce qui nous montre une idée du nombre moyen de kilomètres qu'un américain doit faire pour acheter un hamburger de l'enseigne McDonald's. Sur cette carte, seule la chaîne de restauration McDonald's est représentée, on peut donc imaginer le nombre impressionnant de fast-foods qu'il y a aux Etats-Unis.
